You cast your line on a peaceful, pixel-art lake. Frogs croak. Fireflies drift. You hook a fish, fight the line, land it, hold it up proudly…
…and the music cuts out with a record scratch. The fish slowly turns to look at you. Then it transforms: the sky goes dark, it levitates screaming its battle cry in a flaming aura, sprouts scrawny noodle limbs one POP! at a time, pumps them into huge muscles, receives boxer shorts from the heavens and slams onto the dock. The screen shatters, and you're in a 16-bit boss fight against your catch.
Real fishing first
- Set the hook. Wait through the nibbles and strike the instant the bobber goes under for a perfect hookset.
- Pump and reel. Lift to drag the fish in, lower and reel to take up the slack, and keep the line out of the red.
- Every fish fights the line its own way, and it's a preview of its boss fight: the salmon leaps, the pufferfish swells up, the eel charges the line, the anglerfish drags you into the dark.
- Net it. A clean catch shows up to the fight worn out; a sloppy one shows up fresh.
Then the fight
Every fish has two or three specials, a projectile and a desperation super with a full-screen cut-in. Each boss has its own stage and its own crowd, from the bear waiting at Salmon Falls to the octopus DJ at the Reef Club, and its own theme tune. And the last boss has a true form.
After your first win
- Daily Catch. The same fish for everyone today, scored, on a Game Center leaderboard.
- Night Lake. The whole roster again, by moonlight.
- Tournament. Every legend back to back, against the clock.
- Versus. Fight as any fish you've beaten, against the computer or a friend.
- The bait shop. Spend the clams you earn on rods, reels, lines, charms and very important hats.
